I got the Star Trek eCookbook by Ethan Phillips and William J. Birnes for Christmas and it has been fun to read and to try making some of the recipes. I was particularly attracted to the "Cocktails." In reality, they are mocktails, just beverages made to look alien but not necessarily good to drink. It's a big book but spans all Star Trek series. Lots of history and fun.
Anyway, this is leading up to my latest eBook purchase, meaning, I haven't bought an eBook in a long time. Here in Mexico, I have bought Spanish books I can't read. Anyway, an article on Twitter caught my eye. It was a podcast interview on Geek's Guide to the Galaxy hosted on Wired.com with Dr. Lisa Yaszek who teaches Science Fiction Studies. As a result of research, she produced: The Future is Female! “25 CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION STORIES BY WOMEN, FROM PULP PIONEERS TO URSULA K. LE GUIN”
Dr. Lisa Yaszek
Bottomline, Dr. Yaszek's book took me back to the days when I was immersed in science fiction. I was familiar with many of the zines and authors she writes about.
In addition, several of the authors stories were made into movies or TV episodes which I found on Youtube. They are old.
Atomic Attack
The People
Also, I felt this circuitous route from podcast to eBook purchase and more was a good example of how authors need to get the word out by any method available.
One reason I don't buy many eBooks is I don't trust these apps to remember the books I bought or got for free. Kindle dropped many free books I got from my library. Not sure about iBooks because I haven't bought many eBooks for that app.
But, I guess because my devices are all working well!!! I've got a bit more confidence or I am willing to take a risk, one or the other :-)

Those movies are great. Showing actors/actresses in the early part of their careers. Neat. Thanks Ria.

Guess that's the thing we have to remember about ebooks: we don't own them, we rent them...

I also worry about losing some purchased ebooks. I fixed that by downloading each .epub file to my laptop. I make a backup up to my external hard drive, before I even open the epub file to read on the laptop. If needed, I can side load it to my palm pilot to read in bed or elsewhere. If it is bad, I just delete from the laptop but know I have a copy on the external hard drive if needed later. :-)

I went to check at Amazon to see how many books I have bought/downloaded from there. A mere 5,029, (no wonder I'm so poor). The only book I've ever noticed Amazon to delete was George Orwell's 1984 which they put out as free then found they didn't have the right to do so and deleted it from everyone's Kindles. BUT if you don't trust them then choose the 'Download and transfer by USB' option to download it to your computer. Once there you can add it to 'calibre' then remove any DRM. (Easy to do if you bought it - Google it). You can make a backup of your calibre library on any media you have handy. Don't forget if you subscribe to Office 365 that includes 2 Tb of cloud storage - Onedrive.

I exclusively download to a kindle. Essentially, I would have to be purchasing from a laptop or pc to get at the epub to save it?

Once you've bought an ebook from Amazon you can re-download it in any way you wish from the 'Your content and devices' link. (Under Your account if you don't see it) Find the ebook and click the […] button at the left then choose 'Download & transfer via USB'

Essentially, though, you have to be on the amazon site on a pc or laptop to transfer to usb. None of this can be done directly from a kindle?

I do not have a Kindle but I think you are right.
For Amazon eBook purchases, I go to my laptop and download my eBook to a Kindle app on my devices. When I bought my last eBook from an independent publisher, I downloaded the eBook file to my hard drive and opened it iBooks which is synced to another device. I do the same with iTunes to buy music, audiobooks etc. Sometimes, depending on where you buy an item, you do not always get a wide range of format choices. The iCloud is the mix somewhere :-)
Plus, you have no idea how nice it is to be able to say all that because I have been busy straightening out my accounts and devices so they work the way I want.
You read PDFs in iBooks, free or purchased.

Read ebooks (and SW Forum) on a Kindle device, where I also buy the books. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything...
