Hi folks. For the past few months, I have been averaging about 5 page hits per day on each of my books (one free, one for sale). Suddenly page hits are down to almost nothing. I have had 1 download of my free book on SW in the past week. The last download of the 35% sample of my book for sale was 21 days ago.
Have I fallen off of the face of the net, or is this just the result of something simple like kids going back to school, or people giving up books for Labor Day.....?
What are you folks seeing with your books?

Things have slowed a bit since last months promo, but, I seem to remember that happened last time too.

I don't have a whole lot of history to draw from on SW, but my sales have slowed to nothing on Smashwords and I haven't had a sale on the actual SW site since the end of July. I am still getting sales through some of the other SW venues like Apple, Kobo and Barnes & Noble, but nothing on SW. My sales on Amazon are down about 20% as well. I really hope that sales start to pick up soon. I have another straight novel coming out in the next couple of weeks and really want it to do well.

Thanks for the replies. I have a novel that should be ready to publish this week. I have has zero sales on all fronts for two months. I gave away 86 copies of my free book on B&N and 3 copies on Sony. Really slow lately.

Could be something similar to what Groupon is causing in some industries. For instance, the massage therapy industry is being hurt by Groupon because they have lowered the price for massages and they run them so often that people simply wait for the next groupon to come out. Same for ebooks. There is quite a lot of marketing tacticians out now preaching about making your book hit big by giving it away first. This does indeed work, although I wonder if it is making people simply wait for the next free book rather than shopping the paid books.

Even downloads of my free book have fallen off to almost nothing. They are starting to pick back up a little now (2 copies in 2 days - woohoo! But it's better than 1 copy in the 16 previous days).

It may just be the economy, or it may be the flood of free ebooks like motherspider suggested.
If sales are slipping then more marketing is required, perhaps a price adjustment like Walmart, and of course a new work to recapture your audience and remind readers of your other works.
