Does anyone know how the "Library Direct" channel works? Is it really just a special class of account, just like any other user account, except that it give them access to the Library Direct pricing?
I have contacted my local county library system to ask them to include my books in their ebook collection. I am not prepared at this moment to make my non-free book free to all libraries, but I would like to donate copies to my local library system. So the question is, if I generate a coupon code to make my book free, can they use that coupon code through their Library Direct account?

Oh well. I just heard back from my county library's ebook person - they do not have their own content server. They contract all of their ebooks through a company called Overdrive Content Reserve.
I can't even GIVE my books away :-)

Overdrive is one of the many middlemen operating between libraries/schools and publishers. It's hard to break into that system as Mark isn't a major player in the print/ebook publishing world. Outfits like Overdrive can afford to deal only with established print publishers. Overdrive does limit distribution to the US, while some other middlemen distribute to libraries (and possibly schools) around the world.
A couple or three months ago I wrote to Mark about one middleman that distributes to libraries around the world (he likely already knew about the company) but never heard back from Mark.
If you want to give a couple of works away at the local library then why not see if they have a bulletin board on which you can post a coupon code for a couple of months and see what happens?

That's an interesting idea about the bulletin board service. I will have to look into it. My main goal was to get it into their online catalog, and maybe even get them to do a "local author" thing on their web page.
I will look to see if they have any place where I can post a coupon code. It's worth a try.
Thanks.

If you're going to post something on a bulletin board, grab one of those free QR code creators and add that to your notice so people with cell phones etc can just snap and go.
I use the QR code generator for CorelDraw, but there are lots of other free ones on the net.
