Sales show up in your Sales Report stats before they show up in the Quarterly Sales report. Information in your Sales Report page explains how sales appear. Click the 2012 hyperlink to see all your sales and Accrued Sales. Sales for the retailer from whom the book was purchased by your relative will have an increase displayed on the 2012 Sales Report page.

Ok, I was just wondering what the time lag is, one of my family bought a book on Kobo and it hasn't shown up in any of the sales reports.

Mark announced a while back they are working to integrate all retail partners so data is updated more quickly. Kobo, being bought earlier this year by a huge Japanese conglomerate which is expanding its massive Internet retailing base already established in North America, Europe, and Asia, is likely having to integrate not just Smashwords data within itself but also getting ebook data to the other retailers within the Japanese group.
Kobo is the third largest ebook retailer behind Amazon and Apple. The further world-wide expansion of Kobo isn't going to be completed in a couple of days, but updates will be much quicker soon.
