I am helping a friend publish a cookbook (in Spanish and Mayan).
I went to my Smashwords account to introduce her to Smashwords and lo and behold, the dashboard said, I made $10.00. Amazing! I think this bounty came from the Smashwords Summer Sale where I reduced most of my eBooks by 25%.
It sure was nice not to see all zeros :-)
I think blogging and tweeting have been fairly effective marketing tools for me.
On the other hand, when I reread some of my books, I see so many things I would change now. I actually groan when I reread them. Maybe someday.
My friend lives in Mexico, so for her, her only option on Smashwords was to use a paypal account. For various reasons, she did not want to open a pay pal account.
For many there is a digital divide or abyss.
We are going to print locally and publish online. This woman is intelligent, creative (really creative, very artistic), courageous and fearless, so this is an adventure for us both.

I am in total sympathy with your friend. I have some royalties, but have been dithering about giving paypal my account details especially as the amount is piddling. Doesn't seem a fair trade somehow.
Great news about your windfall! Now, promise not to go mad with it....
