Hi, I'm new to ebook publishing and I have exported my book as an epub in Calibre, validated it and uploaded it to Smashwords, my question is, have I shot myself in the foot by limiting my book as an epub. I tried to upload a Word doc file of the same book in the hope the meatgrinder would produce more file types for different readers, but it informs me that my book already exists. If I upload the Word file will I lose my stats for the original upload or will it remain the same. Thanks in advance.

ePub is the standard file format for ereaders, except at Amazon, and for distributing/reading ebooks (except Amazon Kindle).
Join Amazon KDP and publish your work there for Kindle readers. Price your ebook the same on Amazon as it is on Smashwords or you'll have problems.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Ted, I appreciate it, just one more thing if that's OK, Amazon makes you charge a nominal fee and my book is on Smashwords for free, I would like to see if there is any interest in my work before I start to charge for it, is there a way I can have my book for free on Amazon also. I don't want to upset the apple cart. Thanks, Andrew

Leave your work on Smashwords for free and don't bother with Amazon if you are testing the waters to see if anyone likes your ebook.

If you really want to see how it will perform on Amazon, you can do as I've done on some of mine that I wanted to be free. You have to list it on Amazon and charge the nominal fee you mentioned ($0.99). Once its live, you have to click this link that you'll find on your book's page. Provide the Smashwords link to your book page (I usually provide the B&N link, but I did the total affiliate Premium distribution, not just Smashwords).

Amazon doesn't tend to take any notice of Smashwords prices since they don't see it as competition. They will price match books at B&N, Kobo, Apple and annoyingly Google Play Books. I say 'annoyingly' because Google has a habit of discounting prices of books there to below what price you set elsewhere. This can cause a sudden decrease in royalties from Amazon if they pricematch. There are ways round this but it's complicated though.
Beware of making your book free everywhere if you plan to charge for it later. It can be a lot harder to start charging for it than to set it to be free. If you do plan to start charging then I suggest you set a $0.99 price at Smashwords and offer a coupon to make it free there.

Maybe, what you can do is "revise" or "update" your book and submit it as a "new" book as a Word doc to Smashwords,
I understand your problem.
