Checking my email today I found an offer to promote my book 'Black Knight Squadron' (which is not my book) from a promotion site I've never heard of. (i.e. spam) The email came from a gmail account - never a good sign. Since I'm currently compiling a list of book promotion sites I investigated Bookpromo[dot]net. This is what I found:
• They offer to list your book on their website - It's Alexa rank indicates it gets few visitors but they say it gets 2,000 per day . • They offer to tweet your book to 200K readers - I checked - they can't add up - I made it 102,030. Not only are they poor at maths but they appear to have borrowed Twitter accounts, one of which seems to belong to a pornography site.
• They have a glowing recommendation for their services from an author who had the lowest book rank I've ever seen at Amazon - over 10 million.
You can have this exceptionally valueless 20 day deal for a mere $19.99 or pay £29.99 to get it for 60 days.
Beware of the scam book promotion sites.

Has scam written all over it. It's one thing to give your data/work over in exchange for something. It's another when you pay them to take your stuff.
Still, if they are legit they have to start somewhere. I have seen people try a lot of new distribution channels on this forum...

Jaydax, what a great piece on Self-Publishing/author Scams.

Usually these "services" operate several Twitter accounts to claim their lofty following...problem is, all the accounts have the same followers, so they might have 200k between the accounts, but they might only have 50k unique followers...and then, like you said, how many of them are potential buyers...most are probably other spam accounts that mutually follow each other as a favor...and that doesn't help promote your book

Or, they've 'bought' their followers...
