Merry Christmas. ...is this now a default thread for whatever we want to talk about? I think so! Hope you all have a nice Christmas in your neck of the woods. At least it keeps the author's original question/comment at the top...
My Christmas is okay, I guess...nothing special. Hope you're having a nice, relaxing day...

And back to the promoting theme, (loosely) I wanted my new book free for a couple of months to get some interest. As an example, 205 downloads just from smashwords and still growing so far. The D2D retailers have had it free from day one apart from Amazon put the strange price of 87 cents on it. I did the usual "tell us of a lower price" thing to no avail. A message to D2D got a friendly response from them and a prod to Zon finally got the book free on the UK zon site and using this for the "tell us about..." with dot com I hope for the others to fall in line. I've no idea about blogging or web thingies so do it in my own analogue sort of way. number 1 free for Craggy worked so I'm hoping the Drifta series goes the same way. Time will tell.

Happy new writing everyone. Trying to get on with Drifta's Quest 2 but health issues means I'm too tired to concentrate much at the moment. Book 1 is up at numbers 65 and 61 space opera/science fiction on Amazon UK freebies but nothing happening with Amazon.com as they still have a price on it. I've done the "tell us of a lower price " thing on their .com site using their own link to the U K zon book but still nothing. They do work in mysterious ways. In ways I never quite understand, new book is there on my goodreads list without effort from me, so that's good. Goodreads is now under the Amazon wing so I expect it comes via that way. This is a useful way of connecting with readers and although reviews and comments are duplicated on Amazon and goodreads, it is possible to get goodreads only reviews. That said, I have sometimes been sceptical about some reviewers on there and because it's possible to see all their reviews, a quick look revealed they gave five star reviews for everything they read, dozens of titles. Kinda takes the warm glow off it a bit.
Hopefully I'll be back in the land of the living soon so I can immerse myself in the fantasy realms where I have my own sat nav.

Pleased for the 254 smashwords downloads for my new book Drifta's Quest since adding it as a freebie (for a short time as a promo) making the total for all the freebies on there during this period topping the 700 mark, One Way To Mars coming in second place with 54 hits. Even my little poetry book got 10 new readers. Some folk get sniffy at tossing another freebie into the mix but books not seeing the light of day for ages have been dusted off for more outings. Maybe something to think about if your stuff needs a poke with a sharp stick. Use it in moderation though. I can't get my head around Amazon.com putting 82 cents on Drifta when the other zon sites has it completely free??? On the D2D reports, this shows some at 82 cents to zon, 0 to me. Anyone understand that? Other freebie Drifta's are just that, free. or so it seems to me. Dunno. Beats me. Zon works in mysterious ways.

On my own promotion effort with freebie Drifta's Quest, still pleased with the take-up thus far. On Smash it continues to do well, as it leads the way with 263 hits with still some interest in all the other free stuff. Nudging 800 total hits for everything, One Way to Mars has reached 68 hits and the Davron serial (not series) has found 20ish readers for each episode. Not at all bad from just smash. Across the D2D affiliates has been a slower take up now gaining momentum with Drifta drifting in and out of the top 50 free in two categories on Zon.UK. Just odd that as smash tails off, the others starts to grow. I intend to leave it free for a couple of months before putting some extortionate sum on it. What's your opinion on this? Better to remain unread than making it free even for awhile? I know folk have mixed views on this.

Well, free shorts seems to work. On a roll with Oceans of Death on smash when it comes to reviews. Just had the second one for it. A nice four star. I'll gloss over the fact it was six years after the first review. Happy days!

I personally like free first in series to sample newly discovered authors. If I love the story I purchase the rest of the series. I need to look at my books again and see if I should make free or $0.99 for my first in series. Then again, I have been thinking to make each series a box set and price cheaper than purchasing each at full price. Apparently some authors are making good money selling series at $9.99 or even more. :-)
I also like to keep first in series high enough so when I do a sale (free or $0.99) it makes an impact with more downloads. Then, hopefully, the readers go on to purchase the rest in series.

D2D to be shipping to google play soon. I'll try not to let the vast amounts of money coming my way go to my head.
