Just wanted to let folks know about some free tools we've put up on the web that might be of help to various Smashwordians. They're at www.reanimus.com/tools . There's... - A checker for common errors that upset Smashword's meatgrinder or the premium review team, so you can fix them up front, before uploading and instantly going live (or waiting days for a premium review rejection). - A "Table of Contents tool" to add ToC's to docs in a less difficult manner. (We're also working on a way to simply convert Word's ToC into something acceptable to meatgrinder; working well in beta test, so stay tuned.) - a Formatting tool (aka "Nuclear Option Assistant") to help reformat a doc into a Smashwords compliant version. - "Smartlinks", which allows links to sales pages for your other books in a way that doesn't get rejected for containing links. On an ipad/iphone it links to the iTunes page, on a Nook it links to the Nook page, etc. We have a few hundred books under our belts on Smashwords, and developed these tools in-house for our own use; I thought they might be helpful to other folks, so we put them up on the web. I hope folks find them useful. (Hi, Admins, if this is felt to be self-promotional in some way, please delete. I looked for a way to send a PM to ask, but I'm apparently not approved for PMs yet. You can read my bio and you'll see I do a variety of non-profit work, so I'm not in this for profit motives, just trying to be helpful.)

Hi reanimuspress, and welcome to our Smashwords Forum. Thanks for the links to various tools on your site.
Thanks too for your query regarding self-promotion. Works for me.

Just wanted to update this -- we've improved the Smashwords conversion tool. It now has a decent chance of taking a random .DOC file and producing a Smashwords compliant file. It tries to preserve italics, bold, headings, and other major format elements.

Since you are a publisher on Smashwords, I think you are in the right spot, thanks for the info, very interesting.
