Hi,
I formatted my book for smash words in open office and everything was fine. But there was a large blank space between two paragraphs. I was able to fix it somehow but after subsequent uploads to fix other stuff, it came back. Now I can't figure out how to fix it again no matter what I try. Maybe I'm not making the right combination of corrections.
Is there any way I can correct this blank space without starting over?
I used one of the templates that W.E. Powelson recommends for doing smash words books in open office.
It's just that one blank space problem I have.
Thanks for any help.

This is really odd. I did a total nuke of my doc and redid everything. If I don't add an extra space with the return key, my book is all no spaces between lines but there are no giant spaces. But if I add one extra space between lines (2 spaces total) there ends up being this one page that is half blank and the next paragraph is pushed to the next page. This problem is on no other page but that one and disappears if I lower the font size by 1.
I would like to have a space between paragraphs (not just indents) to make it easier for readers to read.
But I don't want to break that page. Has anyone encountered something similar and how did you fix it?
Thanks.
P.S. Is this forum still active?

Check your Style settings, or perhaps you copied/pasted some text containing different formatting data and it screwed up your document. There are many reasons why there is a half page blank and all the answers are it's because you did something which created the problem. It could be something as simple as a page break was inserted there for some reason. You could try changing the "after spacing" to 10 pt to have a space between paragraphs. "Before spacing" and right and left indents should be set to 0". "Before spacing" does not show up in Smashwords' books, so you won't have a space before a line if you use it. P.S. Yes. Sometimes you'll get an answer to a question fairly quickly. Thanks, Ted. I am indeed lucky to get a reply.
Anyway, since I posted, I had figured out it was better not to use the "return" key for paragraph spacing. So I did the "Format", "Paragraph", "After Spacing" thing and that fixed it. And, of course, I come back here to alert everyone this was fixed and you've already posted a similar fix suggestion. Sorry about that.
Any way, I set the after paragraph spacing to 0.20. I hope that will be okay. It seems to look fine on an iPad. I am going to check on a kindle in a minute.
I'm still getting about 5 NCX errors for my table of contents in the validator but one thing at a time. I don't know if they are serious errors or not. However, as I said, the book at least *looks* okay on a tablet so far.

Be aware that some readers do not appreciate a lot of white space on their reading devices. What appears nifty on your ipad may well take up half the screen on a typical iphone. Normally a 0.4 spacing between paras is enough. Search the forum for help with your TOC and chapter linking, too...
