I've just uploaded the file for my little book to Amazon, after formatting it using "Building your book for Kindle" guidelines.
What would happen if I uploaded that to Meatgrinder? Would life be sweet forever after?
I ask this because my mobi file in Smashwords isn't as good as the epub version?
P.S. I'm forced to charge for it at Amazon so the previously edited version gets no sales, but as a free book it is doing slowly, but nicely with Smashwords.

You can't upload mobi files to Smashwords at this time, if that is what you mean.
If you want to use a MSWord document file formatted for Amazon then be sure to read the Smashwords Style Guide for information on front matter and any topic which may help you in formatting work for Smashwords.
If your work is free elsewhere then Amazon's spiders will eventually pick up the price difference and correct it. Amazon also has a 'found it at a lower price' link somewhere on an ebook' page displayed on Amazon. Click on the link and provide URL's for sites like B&N, Apple, Kobo. I don't believe Amazon excepts Smashwords, for I believe Amazon considers Smashwords more of a distributor than a retailer.

Mick, I think you'll find the Smashwords mobi the meatgrinder creates from the KDP Word file will still look ... awful, but there's one way to find out.

Download Calibre from calibre-ebook.com/download. It's free. Add your Word document to that and then convert it to epub format in Calibre. If necessary you can fine tune it using the Calibre epub editor. Validate the epub file in the Calibre editor and use an online version of epub check as a final test - try validator.idpf.org/. You can submit the epub file to Amazon and Smashwords but it's better to tweak the front and back matter for each. For example the Smashwords version will require an ISBN number and must not include any links to books at e-book retailers (especially Amazon links because iTunes hates them.)
