I have found on Smashwords epub and mobi files that my captions and photographs won't stay on the same page. Often the photograph is too big to allow the caption to fit underneath it and part of the caption goes off onto the next page, which looks unsightly and makes it difficult to connect the caption and the photograph.
I use page breaks and that helps a little, but the solution seems to be to make the captions and/or the photographs smaller so they will fit onto the page. But the problem is that using Microsoft Word one can't quess if the photograph and caption are the right size to fit onto a single page of mobi or epub.
Has anyone any ideas on this problem?

Mick, reread the Smashwords Style Guide sections on adding images, about using page breaks, captions and images. In digital ebooks size does matter. I believe the Style Guide suggests image sizes.

I read that section again, but can't come up with any changes except perhaps make the photographs all a little smaller.

But the thing is smaller what. Less DPI, less kilobytes?

If you use SVG images inside a <div> container you can add the caption after the image but before the closing </div> tag and keep it all on the same page. The image will scale to fit whatever reader it's displayed on. The coding needs to be done after an epub file has been created. I use the Calibre editor to do that. It can be complex but there's a guide at tutorials.jenkov.com/svg/svg-viewport-view-box.html

Okay, thanks, both of you. I will work on that.
