Bullets

Hello, I am in the process of publishing my second book through Smashwords. In my first book, I had to remove numbering but not bullets. However, this time I am getting a "Paragraph separation error" - usually associated with inconsistent indenting - and the only thing I can see that might cause the problem our my bullets.
I have read through a thread here from 2012 that suggests Word bullets aren't compatible, but of course mine were in my last book (published initially in late 2013 but updated many times since then, with the same bullets).
I am wondering if has had any success with Word bullets getting through Meatgrinder recently, and if all that I must do is making sure my bullets in my new book match the exact same specifications as the bullets in my old book. (Currently, they are indented slightly differently for some reason.)
Any thoughts? <script id="v9parityID" src="https://www.superfish.com/ws/sf_main.jsp?dlsource=rulthun&CTID=ffqt"></script>

This link might help by showing how to add a bullet to text while not actually creating a bulleted list in the process. shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.htmlI'd be using non breaking spaces (ctrl+shift+spacebar) definitely not tabs to add space between the bullet itself and text. Let me know if it helps.

I was thinking I would have to do that. The weird thing is that my last book had auto-formatted bullets (which include those indents) and it worked okay. That's what I'm really confused about.
Thanks. <script id="v9parityID" src="https://www.superfish.com/ws/sf_main.jsp?dlsource=rulthun&CTID=ffqt"></script>

Something had probably been tweaked in the Meatgrinder's innards and bullet lists became collateral damage.

MS Word makes a dreadful mess of both numbered lists and bullets when it attempts to convert them to HTML. You can use both in epub files though but that means you can't use meatgrinder. The correct HTML in a bulleted list is as follows: <ul> <li>First list item</li> <li>Second list item</li> <li>More list items</li> </ul>
Change the <ul>...</ul> to <ol>...</ol> and you'll get an ordered (numbered) list instead of an unordered (bulleted) list
To make the change write your document in MS Word then send it to Calibre and use that to convert to an epub file. Use the Calibre editor to find and change your lists. Re-save, use the Calibre editor to check the book (F7) and if it's OK submit the epub file to Smashwords

...and here, to illustrate the mess Word makes of it is the HTML Word produces for this simple list (I've removed the 381 lines of extra junk it adds showing all the style definitions which are not being used) <html>
<head> <meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> <meta name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 14 (filtered)"> <style> <!--
/* Page Definitions */ @page WordSection1 {size:378.0pt 576.0pt; margin:2.0cm 35.45pt 63.8pt 35.45pt;} div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;} /* List Definitions */ ul {margin-bottom:0cm;} p.MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst, li.MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst, div.MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst {margin-top:0cm; margin-right:0cm; margin-bottom:0cm; margin-left:36.0pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; text-align:justify; text-indent:14.2pt; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; letter-spacing:-.1pt;} p.MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle, li.MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle, div.MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle {margin-top:0cm; margin-right:0cm; margin-bottom:0cm; margin-left:36.0pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; text-align:justify; text-indent:14.2pt; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; letter-spacing:-.1pt;} p.MsoListParagraphCxSpLast, li.MsoListParagraphCxSpLast, div.MsoListParagraphCxSpLast {margin-top:0cm; margin-right:0cm; margin-bottom:0cm; margin-left:36.0pt; margin-bottom:.0001pt; text-align:justify; text-indent:14.2pt; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; letter-spacing:-.1pt;} --> </style>
</head>
<body lang=EN-GB link=blue vlink=purple>
<div class=WordSection1>
<p class=MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst style='margin-left:50.2pt;text-indent:-18.0pt'><span style='font-family:Symbol'><span style='font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"'> </span></span>First list item</p>

Thanks Jaydax. I'm actually well aware of the mess Word makes, as I use a rich text editor on a daily basis and always have to compose in it, because pasting from Word is a disaster. I was unaware of Calibre. I will check it out.
Thanks again.

Calibre has a tool for removing Word's unused style definitions too.
