I want to append a colleague's six-page article to an ebook. I have her permission. Hers is a scholarly work with footnotes. She also references three or four Greek terms, then explains them in English. Do I need to treat those Greek words and characters as an image and try to insert them in line with the text? Or will they be recognized by most ebook readers (I doubt it)? Also, I can omit her footnotes if necessary. I am not using footnotes in my own ebook and don't know if hers are worth the formatting trouble to append her article. Thanks.

I don't know about the Greek characters, but if you are dealing with a scholarly work from your friend, you will need some kind of notes to give credit for the quotations. Footnotes would be nearly impossible in an ebook, but endnotes would be easy enough and the most common scholarly styles allow for them. It should be easy for your friend to change her footnotes to endnotes for you so the work can preserve its integrity. I have several ebooks with endnotes. If you are good with your formatting skills, you can even make them clickable.
