Has anyone tried either Facebook ads or Google Adwords to advertise their books? I am considering trying one or the other. Any opinions on either?

I tried Google Adwords 5-7 years ago, using their pay-per-click system. Lots of clicks but mostly lookie-loo's just costing me money. Ask yourself how often you click on an ad and buy that item. Have you ever clicked on an ad on this forum? I haven't.
According to Internet Advertising Formats and Effectiveness "The average click-through rate of 3% in the 1990s declined to 0.1%-0.3% by 2011". So you need your ad to be displayed lots before anyone actually clicks on it, let alone buys your book. I haven't tried Facebook ads, and I don't click on any of them either.

Thanks Ted. That is very useful information. I had no idea that the click rate was so low. I had figured that few would actually buy my books, but was not sure how many. I will pass on the pay-per-click and find another way to drag customers in. Thanks.

Just a note. Google Adwords rejected my application for Adwords because I had links to commercial items. Huh? Seemed like an illogical response.
Also, I think Google's support of it's own apps is so haphazard. Plus, they drop apps without notice. I am not sure what business they are in but I think email and apps are not even on their radar.

Their company is too busy gathering intel from everyone for the NSA.

Facebook promotion - remarkable for it's ineffectiveness Google adwords - not tremendously useful unles you are lucky enough to find words which people are looking for and no-one else is using.
…and Serbanvcenache - you are paranoid but probably right.
