SW's Site Updates from 9/27/12 cites a new program with Apple which allows us authors to put a badge on our web sites to link to our books in the iTunes store and gives us a small finders fee of sorts.
This question is for anyone who has looked into this further. I already link to my book in iTunes but at this time really have no interest in adding a "badge".
I'm wondering if I can just change the link address (which already is on my web site) to my book on iTunes to get the affiliate (finders fee) credit. Is this doable or is a "badge" the only way to do this?
Thanks in advance?

Hi
From a technically point of view the badge will have a url "behind" it anyway, so as long as you change the link address to that url it should work with no problem.
You would need to check their T&C though in case they don't like that kind of linking.

I checked. According to the PDF, you MUST use the apple badge as provided and it must not be modified.
So, it looks as if pulling out the URL would violate the TOS.

Except if the link is inline, so to link like this Nathan Goater within a sentence is okay. (I have used my smashwords link instead of an Apple link, because I am not sure about the rules regarding linking to Apple in posts They provide an iTunes Link Maker, that gives one option as being text only

I believe that the "iTunes Link Maker" is just a free tool that Apple provides, and is not part of their badge program - you will not get any "finder's fee" for people linking via the iTunes Link Maker url.

Nathanial - Smashwords' site update, dated Sept 27th, link here discusses the iTunes Link Maker and the 5% affiliate program. Are you saying that the two are separate features and one has the choice to either attach the affiliate link url to the badge or not?

Are you saying that the two are separate features and one has the choice to either attach the affiliate link url to the badge or not? I'm sorry, I miss-read what Mark posted on the site updates. I thought that the "Apple Badges" thing was part of their affiliates program, and I thought that the "iTunes Linkmaker" was something separate. I see now that they are both part of Apple's affiliate program and both get the 5% commission.
