I am a copywriter working for the author; posted the file for his ebook yesterday and no epubcheck errors or AutoVetter errors (yay!) HOWEVER, when I look at the iBooks and Kindle files, I see formatting errors. The problem is the errors are only in iBook or only in Kindle (not in both, which would make the solution easy - fix the file and resubmit). How do I correct errors that are in one format only?

I would contact SW support and give them the book name and author name and ask them what to do. If the errors are only showing up in two formats, who knows what you need to correct in the original (if anything) to fix the problem. If they look at the output files in question, then maybe they can track down a bug in the conversion, or maybe locate some obscure formatting issue that the other formats aren't bothered by.
If there are no changes to the original file, they may even be able to correct the formatting on the two version that have issues.

Thanks, Nathaniel. I already wrote support, but it's estimated 10 days for a response, so I figured I'd try a forum... When I originally loaded the file yesterday, I indicated it should be converted to everything possible. Question - if I make corrections to the file and upload the new version, can I indicate it should only apply to updating (for example) the Kindle version, and then the original file will still apply to all the other formats with no changes? Or does every new upload modify every format no matter what?

That's a good question. I uploaded a new version of one of my books, but I don't remember if it gave me the option to select which format to covert the new version to.
If you know what is wrong with the original and can correct it, I'd give it a try. If it lets you select only those formats that need the change, great. If not, worst case is a new version of all formats gets uploaded and distributed. Submitting a new version will bump you back in the Premium review, but you are only a day or two into now, so not a huge loss.

Sue, when uploading a revision you should check the box for each format you want converted and not just the formats you want fixed. The conversion process is automatic, like Amazon, B&N, etc. and involves no human activity.
An epub on Apple should look the same as an epub on a nook or any other epub reader IF Apple and Nook obey epub standards.
Having said that, Mark mentioned that Smashwords will allow epub uploads by the end of this year. This would make it easier for authors to tailor their works to the style they desire.

Apologies for being so fuzzy on all this - I'm still wondering - can I upload "revision 2" (that I've corrected with the Kindle errors I can see) and only check Kindle so that's fixed. Then upload "revision 3" and only check Apple so the Apple issues are fixed, and so on? The situation is formatting errors appear in the Kindle file that don't appear anywhere else - I don't want to 'fix' those and create problems in the other formats that were okay to begin with.

suew. No. I wouldn't bother with the Kindle version on Smashwords if you're having that much problem. Most Kindle users don't know how to get works from anywhere but Amazon.
Upload your work to KDP and follow their style guide before uploading. Make sure you uncheck Amazon in your Channel Manager page to prevent duplication if/when Smashwords and Amazon ever come to an agreement.
