Jack, I don't pay attention to the star ratings anymore, for the same reason I don't read reviews. If a description sounds interesting and the sample shows the work has promise then I'll decide to purchase or not.
Both star rating and review systems have been abused, are being abused, and will likely continue to be abused.

I posted a link to this article on another thread - sorry for the duplication - but it is just as relevant and illuminating in this thread. The more I learn about the truth behind reviews, the more wary I become of their legitimacy, while at the same time, still have that niggling feeling that "I need reviews" in order to be spotted within the sea of eBooks that are out there. I refuse to pay or beg though, beyond submitting a few requests to various review blogs. I would much rather receive honest, unsolicited feedback from my readers. I am finding, though, that they tend to contact me directly instead of taking the time to post their comments on any sites. I am working on my mental telepathy skills..."Please go and write that on my book listing..." www.nytimes.com/2012/08/26/business/book-reviewers-for-hire-meet-a-demand-for-online-raves.html?pagewanted=all&_moc.semityn.www&_r=1&
