I've noticed that when I convert my ebooks into .pdf format in Smashwords, it doesn't include the cover image.
Is that normal for .pdf ebooks? I was under the impression that the first page of the .pdf would contain an image of the book cover.

That is normal for PDF's as far as I know. You'd have to include a cover image on page 1 of your work if you wanted it to appear in PDF's, but then doing so would likely screw up the other ebook formats by providing reader with 2 covers.

That's interesting. Why is that, do you know? Why do .pdf's lack cover images, yet most of the rest do?

That's a question you'd have to ask Adobe.

hi guys, i see that there are no cover images in pdf or rtf. when i tried to add the cover image into the file, it did screw up the epud and mobi, as Ted said. but i also understand that i can't include large font in the doc source file.
so any ideas about how to make a decent looking cover image that will come out in pdf and rtf? its a shame that in those formats there's no title to the book! (just the copyright page). thanks shaiya

hi Ted, the question about the title for pdf isn't for adobe, though, i don't think. i've seen many books in pdf with a title page. i can make one right now. the problem is, i can't upload it to smashwords. i think it must be a smashwords based decision not to have title pages in pdf, no? thanks again shaiya

Shaiya, in your case I suggest you uncheck the PDF and RTF boxes on Smashwords - there's no recent ereaders I'm aware of using those two formats nowadays - and publish those formats yourself so you may offer them for sale on your website or craigslist or somewhere. You can easily use MSWord to output PDF's and RTF's with pictures. Just read the Help information included in MSWord.

I include a cover in my upload to the meatgrinder and have a separate cover that meets SW spec's. The downside of this is that a customer d/l the book in anything other than pdf will get 2 covers. The downside of the alternative is that the pdf customer will get no cover at all. So I choose the former course which has no effect on the book other than sometimes showing the 2nd cover in the wrong aspect ratio, depending on the device.
The pdf/cover issue is dealt with in the style guide.
