My terra-firma writing group is exploring the process for submitting work to various media outlets.
Since I have never done this before, I would love to hear from other writers about their experiences seeking to submit their work to various media outlets, print or eprint.
Thank you all in advance :-)

What do you mean by 'media outlets?' Is this something different from publishers? Are you thinking of some of the social media sites where people publish chapters, whole books?

Well, I can see from my searches that there are various online media that seek submissions and there are print media outlets that seek submissions. They all have their own procedures and criteria. I have never made a submission, so I can not speak to the topic beyond this but my sense is that many of the media outlets are online or print magazines or anthologies. IMHO, I think social media sites are places where writers share their work just to get feedback. But, this is a whole area for me to explore.
Prolific writes seem to like a variety of media outlets.
Whereas, in my terra-firma writing group, we are trying to select various media sites that reflect our potential audiences. I am not keen on paying a media outlet $ to accept a submission.
Each writer's path to find audience recognition is quite different.

Hola Chelsfield: I do not generally submit articles for publication. But, when I search "submissions for...fiction or nonfiction etc.", I get lists of mostly online magazines, there are some publishing outlets that produce novels etc. There are flash fiction sites that solicit submissions. In my terra-firma group, most write articles and/or poetry. So, I was looking for sites for them to submit their articles. What I am uncomfortable with is most requests for submissions require a fee. Making submissions is still a new venture for me, so I am scouting around for people with some experience with submitting articles or novels to various media outlets (outlets include any form of submission for publication, even online newspapers).

Do not pay anything for submitting articles for publishing. It is a scam. Real sites want articles to publish without you paying anything, so you can safely submit to them. I do know of one article site where you put the articles and if they are used then you get paid. However, my memory can't recall the name yet. When I think of it I will let you know. :-) In the meantime you can check out this link www.completeconnection.ca/article-submission-sites/

Hey Ria! Hope you are keeping well. I would tend to agree with dj about the payments to online mags etc. I have had some experience with prizes and awards, here in the UK at least, where a fee is generally acceptable. If you are going to submit to a magazine or prize, you should always check the provenance so to speak: who are the publishers, what's been said online about the publication, who publishes in it (google search).
Thanks for clarifying, and your group sounds great!
