Why am I promoting a cookbook?
Years ago, Amy Dacyczyn's book, The Tightwad Gazette, revolutionized my life.
I could never figure out how to budget, still can't, but Amy refocused my energies towards saving money and I did pretty well for awhile. But, Amy's book wasn't just about being a tightwad and here's where I think many good stories go, she went beyond tightwaddery and looked at the impact consumerism has on our lives, our planet and our spirits.
Now, Jack Monroe's blog and cookbooks revived my Tightwad instincts and inspired me, again, to look at my spending decisions, especially in the kitchen. At the heart of Jack Monroe's cookbooks are stories of life, food and politics.
To use an oft-used quote, "The personal is political." Every decision we make is political.
While Jack's life is an inspiration to many, she has gone beyond the story.
When you read her works, you read the story of her life and the many ways poverty and politics have impacted her life and the lives of us all.
