Not trusting/talking to police is ingrained in many cultures where brutality and bribes are the common response to a plea for help. Or a request for help or offer to help police is ignored by the police in that country, so eventually residents just shrug and say "What can we do?"
I can speak only of my experience here in BC. It took a generation of immigrants from India before their sons and daughters felt no fear or sense of uselessness going to the police. But even today it is many of the first generation parents and grandparents who continue to be leery of going to the police for any kind of assistance or offering police information on some crime.
It's almost 1am here. So I'm off to nappy land. Ciao.

Much on our news about this. When I started this thread, I thought it was just me expressing my sadness and feelings for one incident. It seems never ending and possibly escalating. For those not living in the U K, it must be difficult to comprehend. I'm not racist and I'm non-religious. Many others do not share those opinions. after each attack by I S I S, the Muslim community state I S I S does not represent them or their faith and I / we generally accept that. However. Although I'm sure there are Muslims helping to stop the radicalism, also helping the authorities with information, it isn't really obvious to the rest of us. Had the Muslim community done more to stamp out radicalism which reflects so badly on them as a whole, we would have complete solidarity with them. Too late, I suspect, but if Muslims here in the U K start to do their part in an obvious way, there would be less animosity and more solidarity. Many years ago, a local M P, Enoch Evans, was vilified for his "Rivers of Blood" speech warnings on immigration. Let's hope he was wrong and we see no more of this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivers_of_Blood_speech Don't know how it is in other countries, but we in the US get hammered with the "if you see something, say something" mantra. Then we see images on the news from the "Muslim community" over there where they're complaining "It's not our job," "we shouldn't have to do the police's job for them," and we come away feeling the Muslim community over there is just a bunch of jerks, but buried in the news stories, we hear the community did in fact warn authorities over the Manchester attacker (my brother said he heard the same thing about the London attacker too), and the authorities just ignored it. Maybe it's just US media trying to make Theresa May look bad after she complained to Trump about leaks and pulled back intelligence sharing, but here in the States, it feels like the British authorities are being painted as incompetent and inept...and it's hard to believe it's as bad as our press paints it.

Our politicians aspire to be incompetent and inept. They'll make it one day. I'm sure the Muslims here work with the authorities to help weed out the extremists. Understandably, they have to be careful for fear of reprisals. It's a dirty war. Prime Minister May slashed the police numbers by thousands and planned to slash more. Same government knocked back the building regulation reviews which could have prevented the London fire. Her government is good at passing the buck with one hand and shackling others so they can't do their jobs. That's why we slashed her majority. I've yet to see her answer a direct question with a direct answer. I predict another election before the year is over and the tories will be relegated.

I've just posted this on facebook.
My flat. I really have no bloody idea if it is safe or not. We have had a letter from the installer or manufacturer that the cladding used here is rated non combustible. I found that reassuring until I hear on the news now that ALL tests on cladding so far nationwide have FAILED! W T F! This morning I was chastising the council responsible for the Grenfell flats, but if so far 17 councils have such cladded flats, can they all be culpable? I don't see how. If the cladding isn't passing the obscure legislation then how come it was allowed to be used? Heads have to roll for this. Had the London flats not gone up in flames, it would have been a post code lottery as to which one would have suffered the same consequences. Eventually, this block will be tested. If advised to evacuate, I'm staying put. Just strip off that ugly cladding and spend money on a decent heating system other than the crap storage heaters that do nothing yet cost a fortune to run. This scandal will make Brexit look like a bloody minor detail. We are in for interesting times.

This is dearly one thread I wish would not need new posts. And yet again we have another atrocity of mindless carnage. No horror fiction comes close to the reality of today. Broken families, broken bodies, broken dreams.
