dj, ria, I do think there is something to the critical mass or halo effect. What happens though is that most writers aren't as persistent with the writing after what they see as the failure of their first publication. They say differently, but quite a few still believe that the first time will be the big break. You see it on this discussion list - people who are really present here while they are writing, but once nothing really happens, you never hear from them again. Publishing is like the lottery, everyone thinks they will win and imagine what they will do with all that cash. While I am not good at math and especially percentages, I can see that winning the lottery is a looooooooooooooong shot. www.mdlottery.com/games/mega-millions/payouts/maybe publishing has the same percentages :-)

Yes, chelsfield, writing and publishing is a long term business. It is extremely rare to have a best seller with a first book. Better off painting a picture in a week. Sell a print run of 1000 at $50.00 each, then sell the original for $2500. Done. No more sales. And repeat with another picture the next week. Writing is spending a month or year writing and revising story, then selling as print copy or eBook copy for the rest of your life plus 50 or 70 years. Slow return on investment, but if you had 100 books earning 10% of your time and costs to create you have a good (excellent) passive income stream. :-) And, yes, I have a spreadsheet that I update monthly monitoring my sales and return on my investment (time + cost) to publish.
