What authors need is a retail/distribution site created by authors who've experienced all the shi*. Ted, I wonder if there is anywhere on this site that contributing authors can just have a brief paragraph on the mechanics and promotion of their publishing. For instance, Gary doesn't publish with Smash, but I know he distributes his work through other channels aside from Amazon. Many others have tried different ways of publishing and promotion. I know I could hunt through different threads to discover what Gary or Julie or you are doing to distribute your books, but that would take a while and I am sure to miss pearls. I also acknowledge that we have our profiles, but could there be a more visible way, readily available to newbies and those like myself who think, "now I know DJ had some good advice on this, now where is it?!" Were you looking for something like this: djmills.wordpress.com/business-of-writing/software-to-produce-ebooks-pbooks/

Exactly, DJ! Now why am I not surprised that you had something ready?
Sorry, Ted. Didn't mean to give you extra work...

Gotta love goodreads. (I think there's a law or something) They add reviews, they lose a bucket load of reviews, they add them again. According to G R I have 108 titles on there. I've no idea how many titles I have out there as I've not counted them but I know a couple are duplicated on G R. Craggy 1 does well with reviews, at least on one craggy 1 thread which is wrongly called Craggy 3. The other Craggy 1 gets fewer reviews and they are more negative than the other Craggy 1. I'm up to 349 reviews for all my books. (or 399 if we use the old figures) A few nice five stars recently from one fan. Craggy can do no wrong, at least in her opinion. On Goodreads I have one star reviews reminding me what an illiterate bum I really am, next to five stars insisting I'm totally brilliant. I suspect I am an illiterate moron with flashes of brilliance depending on my alcohol intake. I have tried to reach out to the Goodreaders on the ask the author thing. I've never been asked a question by a single reader. About twice a year I even remember to update the bloggy thing. I'm sure I'm the only reader of it. What the hell. People put my books on there, read them, tell me I'm crap or I'm entertaining. I'll settle for being a crappy entertainer. So there we have my Goodreads experience. Totally nuts and inexplicable. Hmm. No wonder I fit in so well there. Do you?

Thanks, Gary, but not exactly. Not advice, just what you do, what software do you use to format, where do you distribute, where you never would. My sense from this forum is that people have different approaches, the product of trial and error. One size does not fit all. DJ's is a good example....

Hey Chels. I rarely write these days, but do a bit of work for several other authors, mainly because they are techni-phobes. I format using Word 2010/Atlantis for ebook, fix Gary's grammar on Open Office, and use FrameMaker for paperbacks. Corel paintshop pro for covers. Adobe acrobat pro for pdf related stuff... And I always, always, do conversions via Draft 2 Digital, and use their generated mobi file for KDP. I leave it to the authors to choose who to distribute with. As for marketing... I follow Kboards and a couple of facebook groups. AMS ads are apparently failing at the moment. its like anything new, gets flooded quickly and loses impact and ends up costing a fortune for little return. Bookbub is good if you can afford it and write series that are currently on trend. But trends change every month and my crystal ball shattered years ago. if I write, the process is so slow I am in danger of rusting. I tried Scrivener once. Downloaded old free version of Indesign and figured because its Adobe I would need four years of training to use it as was the case with FrameMaker, but when I learnt that I was getting paid! What do you use?

Chelsfied, I've created a forum in the General Discussion section. A catch-all board of tips on what a member uses, has used, or stopped doing when it comes to marketing, promoting, ebook distributors, ebook publishers, etc. smashwords-forum.proboards.com/board/54/advice-pros

Breaking News!!! I'm on the brink of signing up for a major deal with a well-known film producer. I can't say who, as the negotiations are on-going, but They are very keen to make, wait for it, Craggy – The Musical. I know. Totally bonkers. A certain Sir Webber, a huge Craggy fan, has been approached for the music side. Nothing signed up yet, but names bandied about so far are, Dolph Lundgren has been suggested for Lance (armour) Dillow. David Jason for the story telling old astronaut, Dixon "Craggy" Cragg. Ian Mckellen for the voice of the Blackness. Keira Knightly could be Fawn Dillow. I've offered to play a cameo part of Freddie Morcurry, perfect for my working class British accent. Thankfully they will have proper writers for the screenplay. Oh, wait. I must have dozed off. This thread is dreams of fame and fortune, right? Back to sleep.
Who will be in your film???

Odd you should mention it - I received similar news recently. JJ Abrams buzzed me to discuss bringing The Valley of Despair to the silver screen. We bandied about some names and finally came up with this short list: Wentworth Miller as Lieutenant Erik von Mendelsöhn Adrianne Palicki as Peenemünde Lange Hugh Jackman as Garmakalok Eric Stoltz as Lafalldor Zach Galifianakis as Argos The shooting is to take place in the heart of deepest, darkest Africa where this true-story actually took place

I feel so lonely. No one has approached me about making a movie. I guess they're just puzzled by my ebooks.

You gotta push the gig, Ted. How about
PUZZLEMAN Not to be confused with Batman's Riddler. Gained super puzzle solving powers appeared when a Rubics cube was accidentally hurled out of a skyscraper window by a frustrated puzzler lands on Puzzleman's head.
The world is full of puzzles, (like Donald Trump), and nobody has the answer. Your puzzle hero, the meek and mild Ted, rips off his anorak and athletic, cloaked man with a P on his chest is revealed and he dashes off to go to a puzzle crisis, and save the world. Now who wouldn't pay good money to see that?
