While the steps below do not cover every process or keystroke, it will give you some idea of what it's like to create a document in Apple's Pages for submission to Smashwords as a Word doc, and epub and as a Print-Ready PDF for a local printer.
Before creating your file, what format output do you want?
.epub, print-ready PDF, or Word Doc for Smashwords
Smashwords limitations:
Publications with multiple images are not recommended.
No picture books.
No Manga.
Open a Word Document:
Turn off auto correct
Turn off auto format
Turn off track changes
Use normal style
Recommends body text size 12, title size 14
Recommends using Times and Arial.
Recommends line spacing 1.5
No Columns
No Tables
No Drop Caps
No Text Boxes
No Headers or Footnotes
No Wrapped text
No Floating images
No PDFs as source files
No Tabs
No more than 3 paragraph returns, remove extra paragraph returns. Can use manual line feed in special formatting instances. In Pages = Shift/enter
Do not use spaces as indents. I think you can used fixed spaces. In Pages = option/space bar
Avoid using multiple paragraph styles.
Do not include links to other online retailers.
Do not include references to other online retailers
.
Do not use Pages or Word’s automatic TOC
Make sure image file names do not include spaces.

Consider including a few sample chapters of your books
Create NCX TOC
Remove hidden bookmarks
File size limit: 10MB - consider compressing images to reduce file size.
My Actions:
The steps listed here are not complete because I tried so many different approaches, I can't remember all the steps.
After making copies of original "Wikipedia Commons" images, I resized them in Preview and saved as jpegs.
I created manuscript in Pages, inserted jpeg images, inline, save copy of manuscript as a Word doc.
SW wants Word doc, stripped of codes at first. Use standard fonts like Times and Arial, Flush left. SW recommends using PNGs 96 dpi but I used jpegs at about the same dpi. Images need to be inline.
This is one way. I think I also copied “Select All” from Pages document and pasted it into a Text Edit document and selected plain text to remove all coding. Then, I inserted the plain text into a blank Word document. It was a small manuscript, so it was not a problem Coding body text and Heading 2A text and checking for paragraphs codes, if needed or if needed to remove.
This is another way. To create a document for Smashwords (SW). I start with a Pages document. Write the manuscript. Then, I Inserted jpeg images even though they recommend PNGs at 96dpi. Images should be inline in the document. Place cursor on line where you want image to sit. Insert the image. Look at styles drawer, at text wrap. Select floating, wrap text and wrap text style. Close styles drawer. Highlight image and select inline from tool bar and select wrap style.
When I look at my Word doc, I have no memory of how I adjusted the images if I needed to.
The basic Word doc was converted from a Pages doc and included the images.
.epub Used Master file created in Pages, used jpegs 96dpi (approximately) images inline. Image names must not contain spaces. Export as .epub. Validate .epub in .epub validator.
Page Layout for Print - Made copy of original Pages manuscript, used custom page setup styles to create page layout for book size, used tiff images inline at 300 dpi. Print to print-ready Adobe PDF PDF/X-1a:2001. To verify if fonts are embedded, look at PDF in Adobe Reader, look at properties, look at fonts.
Alternative: --create in pages, convert to word.docx, save as PDF/X-1a.2001 = print-ready PDF
I think what I needed to do FIRST was to resize my images in jpegs and rename them so they the file name has no spaces. This would have saved me a lot of time.
Sometimes, all the info you need is not in the Users Guide.
Hope this offers some assistance.
