I have a book which consistently produces this error when it's submitted for premium catalogue status. Yet I've checked it, eliminated spurious styles from the Word document, removed formatting and re-applied it and still kept getting the same message. I finally found the answer when I started using the epub editor now available in Calibre. There were lots of styles in the document caused by me using a justified text style and invisible in Word. Apparently Word creates a number of styles with different character spacing to make a justified document look better. The solution is very simple - left align your original text and leave the e-reader to justify it. It's actually one of the things mentioned in the Smashwords style guide but it's not stressed. Once you've produced and previewed the epub file, if you think it needs full justification then it's an easy matter to fix this in the 'stylesheet.css' file that Calibre produces by including the line
text-align: justify;
in the style definition using the editor in step 8 below.
I'm very impressed with the Calibre epub editor. It's very easy to use. My method of making an e-book is now:
text-align: justify;
in the style definition using the editor in step 8 below.
I'm very impressed with the Calibre epub editor. It's very easy to use. My method of making an e-book is now:
- Start with a MS Word document saved as a .docx file
- Use Word's Styles window (Alt Ctrl Shift S) to delete all unused styles
- Use File > Info > Prepare for sharing - Check for issues > Inspect document to remove everything listed in the document inspector window
- Save the document using a filename without spaces in it and add it to Calibre - Currently version 1.24
- Edit the meta data and add a cover image
- Use Calibre to create an epub file making sure that in 'Table of Contents' 'Force use of auto-generated Table of Contents is checked; Level 1 TOC contains //h:h1 and in EPUB Output 'Preserve cover aspect ratio' is checked.
- Check the epub file created in ADE (Calibre's e-reader isn't perfect yet)
- Make any changes needed in Calibre's editor (right click the book name to get this).
- Embed fonts if needed (Tools menu - very easy); add any extra files needed e.g. SVG graphic effects & High-res images.
- Run the editor's check - make any corrections needed
- Save the file and submit it to epubcheck (I use the online version)
If you find text errors in your ebook and need to make changes - no need to do the whole process again - make the changes in the Calibre editor. You should correct your original Word document as well though.
